Charles Gilbert CollectionThe Charles Gilbert Collection, Accession 1229. Silent 16mm reversal film shot between 1928 and 1944, and 9.5mm film from 1923 to 1925. Charles Gilbert lived in Bangor, Maine, and owned a home in Castine, Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1894, and worked as an engineer for Great Northern Paper Company until his retirement in 1924. Gilbert’s 16mm footage is well shot and covers family events such as vacations, holiday rituals, and sporting activities, as well as Wyman Dam construction (1929) and logging. The China footage was shot while Gilbert and his wife were on a world cruise, which he edited together with purchased film of China, probably bought on shipboard.
The film was donated to Northeast Historic Film by Charles Gilbert III (nephew of the filmmaker) and his family in 1996.
